RTD Probes & Assemblies

RTD (s), or resistance temperature detectors, increase in resistance as the temperature rises. They are usually useful for:

Resistance temperature detector probes have a precise nearly linear positive temperature coefficient of resistance that enables the user to accurately detect and measure temperature. U.S. Sensor RTD sensors are especially suitable when the application requires the device to operate at extremely high or extremely low temperatures.

Thermistor probes are invaluable for sensing temperature levels in a variety of industries ranging from HVAC and food handling to automotive and laboratory research. In such applications, it's critical that the thermistor probe used is accurate to ensure reliable thermal monitoring.

Laboratory Grade Temperature Probes
Our highly accurate laboratory grade temperature probes serve as an excellent temperature reference in food preparation, laboratories, and industrial settings, among others. Our laboratory grade temperature probes are given an NIST traceable calibration certificate with data points and a Resistance vs. Temperature (R/T) chart in 0.01°C increments.

Surface Temperature Sensing
Available in a variety of housing sizes and materials, including plastic, copper, and aluminum, this type of thermistor probe is designed and built to withstand even the most demanding commercial and industrial surface temperature sensing applications.

Micro Probes

Thermistors exhibit a very high and precise temperature coefficient of resistance, and therefore they are temperature sensors especially suitable for numerous applications, such as:

  • Temperature Measurement
  • Temperature Control
  • Inrush Current Limiters
  • Etc.

RTDs

The difference in characteristics is determined by the composition of the two. NTC thermistor products are ceramic semiconductors composed of metal oxides that exhibit a very predictable and repeatable R-T characteristic. The oxides are derived from transition metals such as manganese, nickel, cobalt, and copper. In contrast, an RTD probe is fabricated using pure platinum which exhibits an electrical resistance that increases with temperature.

The construction of a thin film RTD sensor is not complicated; It consists of a thin layer of resistive material is first deposited on a ceramic substrate, then followed by a pattern that is etched onto the sensor. The purpose is to create an electrical circuit which is trimmed to produce the desired resistance. Lead wires are then attached to the element and the whole assembly is coated with a thin layer of glass.

The thin film construction of our platinum RTD elements result in a smaller size compared to wire-wound RTDs. Hense, this gives them the advantage of having a fast response time, low thermal mass, high vibration resistance, high thermal shock resistance, and a small footprint.
